"Sacro Profano" by Roberto Rocco

In Milan, the biblical iconographies of our times.

Biblical iconography revisited in a contemporary key,

photographs as works of art.

"Sacro Profano" is a solo exhibition by photographer Roberto Rocco, curated by art critic Marco Eugenio Di Giandomenico. Sponsored by the ARD&NT Institute and the Ethicando Association of Milan, in collaboration with Crea Italia Connections and Betting On Italy, the exhibition features 40 photographic works, 16 of which are physically exhibited and the remaining are projected.

After exhibiting at ART BASEL and immortalizing major Italian and international stars such as Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Madonna, Monica Bellucci, and many others, photographer Roberto Rocco dedicated himself to a new photographic series, "Sacro Profano" in 2020, at the dawn of the great pandemic. The work features 40 images that explore the spirituality of the human soul in the contemporary era.

“A careful reconstruction of settings, costumes, and movements make each photograph a sort of visual transposition of tableaux vivants in the manner of theatrical sets, where the apparent desecration of the original theological iconographic structure founders in a new narrative path, immersing the observer in an aesthetic and emotional experience unprecedented in the panorama of contemporary art.”

“Sacro Profano” is part of the Music and Photography initiative of the Soundart Master's program at the ARD&NT Institute (Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera e Politecnico di Milano) and Professor Roberto Favaro's History of Music and Musical Theater course. The students will create a sound installation inspired by the artist's works.

The music track created by Gianmaria Seveso, a Soundart Master student, for this photography exhibition is titled "Forma Mentis" (translated from the Latin "Form of the Mind").

Analyzing the meaning of the Latin aphorism, we can also interpret it today as "way of thinking." And it is precisely this way of thinking that underlies the music track; that is, the track itself represents Gianmaria Seveso's way of thinking with respect to the themes and meaning presented in the photographic context.
